Lord of the Flies
Chapter 3 – Huts on the Beach
"Stupid Meetings"
Perspective: Ralph

Dear Diary,
Let me start out by saying that there are a lot of jobs that the kids have. The choirboys are hunters, and then the small boys go out with Piggy sometimes and pick fruit. Also, today we had a meeting to have all the boys help me with the shelter (except for the hunters. Jack of course excused them). But do they do any of the work? NO! They work for five minuets and then run off and bathe or eat or play! I can hear their susurration all day as I work. Except for Simon. He was the only one who stayed and helped me with the shelters. Simon is a funny kid. He helped me with the shelters and then when he accidentally knocked one over, he poked the mass of black hair covering his head out of the roof and stairs at me with this contrite look on his face. He has a opaque look that comes into his eye’s, like Jack’s only Jacks is when he’s angry. The hunters also abandoned Jack, leaving him to hunt by himself. Our shelters look nice. There not all that sturdy, but they’re like tendrils.
I mean, shelter is the most important task for survival If it rains like it did when we first arrived we’ll be washed out. Any food we had will be washed into the ocean. If the tide could take our plane out to sea, it could defiantly take out all of our resources, not to mention us! And that is why it is so important to have shelter for the little ones.
Kids are starting to doubt that we will ever get rescued. One boy said that he looked around and couldn’t see any boats. Others say that this isn’t a good island.. But there’s too much wind on the mountain and that blows the smoke around. The hunters are supposed to keep the fire going, but of course, Jack let them leave to hunt. That’s why we disagree and argue so often. He just has a compulsion to kill. To hunt and be able to show his power. He wants to be leader so he fights with me every chance he gets.
