The cry of the hunters.

Chapter 12: Cry of the Hunters
Perspective: Piggy

Last night I hid in the thicket, near the ferns where he slept. Samneric gave me some of the meat from their "new tribes" meal. Yes, Samneric were forced to join Jack’s tribe. But they told me that Roger prepared another stick sharpened at both ends for me. But I didn't understandwhat that meant.

They told me that Jack’s tribe were gonna form a cordon and and start marching through the jungle to try to find me. And it happened to! They were chasing All through the jungle! When I got to the beach, I saw a naval officer in white drill and wearing many epaulettes.

Jack and his hunters were chasing me and appeared on the beach with his hunters right after me. Persival tried to introdues himself, but he forgot his name when he was talking to the officer. That is how long we've been stuck on this island.

I realised that I was responsible and started sobbing. The officer, who thought that us british boys would be able to go longer without turning on each other, felt sorry for me. So now on the ride back, he let me sit in the front with him, while all the other boys are crammed in the back.

Lord of the Flies

Charter 10 – The Shell and the Glasses

“Why Jack is the Protagonist”

Perspective: Simon

The morning after my leaving of their world, Ralph and Piggy met up on the beach. They felt horrible for their behavior the previous night. Piggy couldn’t admit to himself that he played a part in my death. He stated it all as complete accident. But Ralph, laughing hysterically and holding the conch to regain control, said that there was no escaping it and they had been participants in a murder. Piggy started whining and denying the charge.

The way that Jack rules his tribe is just horrible to watch. Especially the treatment of Wilfred. What was the point of tying him to a rock and just beating the crap out if him? Nothing. There was no point. Except Jack showing that he was the “King” of his new tribe and forcing the kids to wait on him hand and knee! And then Jack won’t even take responsibility for my murder! He just referred to me as a beast “in disguise”. He thinks He knows what a beast is. I know what a beast is. I had to stand face to face with it! Actually, Jack is the only one on the island who hasn’t seen a beast on this island. Everyone else sees one when they talk to him and have to look into those evil blue eyes!

I was standing right beside them and I heard Jack Maurice and Roger talking about needing fire more than the others did. They thought they had more power now, and they needed to cook the meat that the hunters killed for them. They realized that the tool for fire making was with Ralph so Jack ordered his tribe to attacked Ralph, Piggy, and Samn’eric. I couldn’t warn them. I’m no longer a part of their lives, just their memory. It was unnecessary, seeing that Ralph and Piggy would of course be willing to share the fire with the boys if they had asked, but Jack just wanted to show the power that he had over Ralph. I’m glad I got off this island before this happened, because I would have been on Ralph’s side, and I would not want the hunters to beat me up.

Chapter 8: Gift for the Darkness

In this scene, Simon finds the sacrificial pig head that the hunters gave as an offering to the “beastie”. Hours later, the pig head has started to rot and decay, and when Simon finds it, it is swarming with flies. Simon had slipped away from the camp and returned to his chapel. When he finds the pig’s head on the stake sits there, staring with it. The sight mesmerizes him, and it even seems as if the head comes to life. The head speaks to Simon as “Lord of the Flies,” stating that Simon will never be able to escape him, or get rid of him. Because he is the beast, and he lives in all us. He yells that Simon the boys are going to have fun on this island! Actual fun. Terrified ghost, Simon faints, as we heard in the beginning of the book that he usually does. I think that this is creepy because it’s like the devil living within us all. The lord of the flies in a way is the devil, seeing that he is the evil in us.

Chapter 9: A View to a Death

I’d like to say that it was Jacks fault, and put all the blame on him, but I can’t, considering that it was the faults of all the boys doing their tribal dance, even Ralph and Piggy. Of course, if Jack had not split from the group, then they wouldn’t have been dancing and they wouldn’t have mistaken Simon for the beast in disguise. So in a way, it is Jack’s fault.

It says that in the boy’s wild state, they do not recognize Simon and start ripping him part, for fear that he is the beast. The wild state was brought on by the wild dance that Jack had them do in the rain, therefore stating that it was Jack bringing the wild state on them. But he never told them to kill Simon, that was all the boys.

It also states that the pilot scares the boys away. They run into the Darkness away from it. I would believe the this means boy’s were in a frenzied state, tired and full of energy that the pig meat gave them. So ultimately, it was their fault.

So it is Jack’s fault for splitting the group and starting a new tribe, accident because of the boy’s fear of the beast, and the fault of the boys as a whole for going crazy and killing Simon.

  • I speared a pig! I speared a pig! I mean, it didn't DIE, but I hit it! I hit it! I hit it! And now I know the rush that Jack gets when he goes hunting! Then Robert went down on all fours and we started pretending to kill him and we stabbed him with the but ends of the spear. It was so funny!
  • Jack suggested we could get someone to dress up as a pig and then we could pretend to kill him. But then Robert said that they need a real pig because it has to be killed. Then Jack suggested that we use a littleun' as a substitute. And honestly, that's gonna kill them!
  • So tonight we found the beastie! It's funny, I didn't think that it actually existed! but I'm sure that it's real now that we heard it crumpling through the creepers and saw it swaying back and forth!
  • I can't wait till we get off this island. I want to get my hair cut, clean my nails really well, and take a nice warm bath. A real one with soap.

Lord of the Flies
Beasts From Air
"Stupid Samn'eric"
Perspective: Jack

What sign comes down from the grown up world?
Ther was a plane that got shot down. The aviator evacuated, but he did something wrong because he was dead when we finally found him.

Why aren’t the boys aware of it?
We all were afraid that the beastie was alive. That's why Sam ‘n Eric were so terrified.

How do Sam ‘n Eric describe the beast?
They say that he has wings and fans and claws and that it was the beasts claws that cut Erics cheak. But they must have been lying because there is no beastie. Just a dad aviator pilot.

What is the attitude of the boys when going off to look for the beast?
They are afraid that it's gonna get them. But they don't wan't to go to the fire where Sam 'n Eric first thought they saw it, they took us to the places where we haven't been.

Is there really a beast? How do you know?
There isn't a beastie. It's just the kids being afraid of the island.

Why do you really not care about being rescued?
Once were home, this will all end. I won't be able to have a prominent role over the kids and have them give me any respect. That will all go to the grown-ups.

Lord of the Flies

Chapter 5 – Beasts from Water

“Ralph vs. Jack”

Perspective: Simon

Why is an assembly called?

Because Ralph was upset.

What concerns are brought up?

Well, Ralph wasn’t happy with how people were not doing their jobs. Like filling up the coconuts with water, when we worked on the huts it was just him n’ me, the hunters aren’t taking care of the fire, people are going to the bathroom anywhere they please, then that is making the fruit dirty.

How do you feel about those concerns?

I feel just as strongly as Ralph does! These things need to happen! Whether we like it or not, we adults following us around anymore.

How are things breaking up (falling apart)?

Well, right now there is a rivalry between Jack and Ralph. Personally, even though I am a choirboy, witch also makes me a hunter, I agree with Ralph. He is our chief and has all the right ideas. If we let Jack be chief, everyone will be forced to be a hunter, and we’ll never be rescued because we won’t have a fire on the mountain.

Why do you think the littluns cry in their sleep?

Well, their afraid of the island and of what they don’t know. They think that there is a Beastie somewhere on the island.

What was Percival Wemys Madison afraid of?

He said that He thinks that the beastie comes from the water. That shook us all and made us stair at the lagoon and the bathing pool and the endless amount of water around us.

What do you think is “the dirtiest thing there is” about human nature?

We have a lot of dirty qualities, but I think the worst is all of our wanting of things we don’t have and don’t need

Lord of the Flies

Chapter 4 – Painted Faces And Long Hair

"ECH! Clay on my face"

Perspective: Piggy

Dear Diary,

The littluns were cute and sweet at the beginning, spending their days building sand castles and eating fruits and swimming, but the small kids are turning out to be too small to help out and the bigger ones will just push each other around because they have no parents to scold them.

We had to paint our faces so that the animals wouldn’t see us. But we used red and black and white! Why would it be harder to see that then our skin? We should have greens on our faces! I was having an okay time on the island, but I don’t like the clay on my face. It’s oily and gets in my eyes. Also, I’m worried that my inhaler will run out soon and I will not be able to breath! And my specs! I need to be able to clean them! And there isn’t enough food on this island! And I sure hope that Ralph’s Father finds us soon! Or else we might not get rescued and what if there are beasts on this island! And During the winter we might get frostbite now that we’ve discarded our clothes!

There was a ship that was passing by today, but it didn’t see us because the hunters weren't paying attention and our fire went out, so it couldn’t see our smoke. I know that it could have though, because we could see the smoke that the ship was making. Now if the hunters were doing their jobs, then we wouldn’t be having this problem!

Lord of the Flies

Chapter 3 – Huts on the Beach

"Stupid Meetings"

Perspective: Ralph

Dear Diary,

Let me start out by saying that there are a lot of jobs that the kids have. The choirboys are hunters, and then the small boys go out with Piggy sometimes and pick fruit. Also, today we had a meeting to have all the boys help me with the shelter (except for the hunters. Jack of course excused them). But do they do any of the work? NO! They work for five minuets and then run off and bathe or eat or play! I can hear their susurration all day as I work. Except for Simon. He was the only one who stayed and helped me with the shelters. Simon is a funny kid. He helped me with the shelters and then when he accidentally knocked one over, he poked the mass of black hair covering his head out of the roof and stairs at me with this contrite look on his face. He has a opaque look that comes into his eye’s, like Jack’s only Jacks is when he’s angry. The hunters also abandoned Jack, leaving him to hunt by himself. Our shelters look nice. There not all that sturdy, but they’re like tendrils.

I mean, shelter is the most important task for survival If it rains like it did when we first arrived we’ll be washed out. Any food we had will be washed into the ocean. If the tide could take our plane out to sea, it could defiantly take out all of our resources, not to mention us! And that is why it is so important to have shelter for the little ones.

Kids are starting to doubt that we will ever get rescued. One boy said that he looked around and couldn’t see any boats. Others say that this isn’t a good island.. But there’s too much wind on the mountain and that blows the smoke around. The hunters are supposed to keep the fire going, but of course, Jack let them leave to hunt. That’s why we disagree and argue so often. He just has a compulsion to kill. To hunt and be able to show his power. He wants to be leader so he fights with me every chance he gets.

Lord of the Flies

Chapter 2 - The Fire on the Mountain

"I Should be Leader"

Perspective: Jack

Dear Diary,

I’m glad that were on an island. Were in control of each other and ourselves. But we need more control. More leadership. More supervision. We need a better leader. Someone like me.

The boy with the weird face said that there was some snake thing. It turns into the vines during the day and comes out at night. But that’s not anything any of us should be worried about. It’s just some stupid symbol he came up with for the fear they all have and the danger in the jungle of the island.

Until a ship or a plane sees our signal smoke, were stuck on this island.

We made a fire that caught the other trees around it.

I’m more of a leader than any of the other boys in many ways. Like that little boy with the birthmark on his face. I wonder where he disappeared to on the island. Maybe that “beast” of his swallowed him up.

As I go to bed each night, I wonder about if we’ll ever get off of this island. If a ship really will come and see our smoke and rescue us. I wish that I could catch a pig or a deer or something. Just to show the rest of the boys how powerful I am.

Lord of the Flies

Chapter 1 - The Sound of the Shell

"Oh dear, I’m a hunter!!!"

Perspective: Simon

Dear Diary,

Today I became a hunter! Me and the other boys will all have to find food for around twenty young boys and all of us! We went from singing and bringing peace to the enormity of killers! Taking life away from one living being to rescue around thirty others. The other boys in the choir all seem excited about our new position, but I’m afraid that they’ll snigger when they see how different I really am from all of them.

When Ralph said “Simon, come with me and Jack” I was so excited to have this proffer from our new leader! That fat boy wanted to come with us, but he would just slow us down.

On our expedition we discovered that this definitely is an island. It has a coral reef protecting it from ships and invaders from coming into our island that goes a little more than half way across.

I can hardly believe that we survived a plain crash. The massive machine must have been powerful to scar the palm fronds and trees the way it did. To think that one wrong move and it could have topples over crushing us into a pulp. Praise the lord that we all still live.

I don’t know if there are any adults on the island with us, but from where Jack, Ralph and I were all standing atop the mountain, it would seem that they were all swept away with the plane. That means no supervision, but it also means that we have an incredulous responsibility to make sure that no one gets hurt until we are rescued. We had to have a way to order so we decided to vote for a chief.

I‘m sort of disappointed because I wanted Jack to be the leader on the island? He’s already our choir leader anyways and I’m worried about how Jack will take it.

I feel that Ralph is only the leader because he as the shell. And if any other boy found a shell and blew on it, then we would probably have a six year old as our leader. Ralph can be the only on to blow the conch, for if he has some disease, then we have no disinfectant on an island, no medicine to cure the next boy who blows on the conch with Ralph’s deadly disease, no. Ralph must hold possession over the conch. However if we got rid of the conch then Ralph would be no longer chief. But we need the conch as our signal for peace and order. So I guess the conch will stay, and the only one to blow the conch will be Ralph who must remain our chief.
